Document Storage Calculator
Customers who are implementing document management systems usually have two very general, and practical, questions:
The Document Storage Calculator can be used to calculate the amount of disk space required to store documents based on the following types of storage containers:
You can enter the number of containers and an average file size per scanned page. The default file size is 50 Kb, which I have found to be a good average.
The application allows you to enter the pages/minute speed of the scanner that will be used, to calculate the time it will take to scan a customer’s backfile or their estimates of what they will scan per day, month, etc. This calculation is based solely on the speed of scanner; it does not take document preparation (straightening bent corners, staple removal, etc.) into consideration. This feature will make it apparent if the speed of the scanner is appropriate for the magnitude of the job, though.
I’ve also included a very basic Data Transfer Calculator. Many customers’ will scan thousands of pages daily and want to be sure they have the bandwidth to upload those scans to an offsite storage facility. At this time the application only accepts the data size in gigabytes and the internet upload speed in megabits/second. Eventually I will add more units that can be used such as megabytes and kilobytes/second.
- How much hard drive space will it take to scan and store my backfile of bankers boxes, file cabinets, etc.?
- How much time will it take to back up these archived documents to offsite storage?
The Document Storage Calculator can be used to calculate the amount of disk space required to store documents based on the following types of storage containers:
- Bankers Box, 3000 pages
- Four Drawer Lateral File Cabinet, 22,000 pages
- Four Drawer Vertical File Cabinet, 10,000 pages
- Lateral File Drawer, 5500 pages
- Linear Feet, 2000 pages
- Pages
- Vertical File Drawer, 2500 pages
